Grumpy Cat — the blue-eyed cat with the withering stare that suggested perpetual irritation — has died, her family announced early Friday. She was 7.
The scowling kitty died of complications from a urinary tract infection, her owners said.
“Some days are grumpier than others,” Tabatha Bundesen wrote, announcing her cat’s death.
Born in 2012, Grumpy Cat became a darling of memes, cat fanciers and anyone who needed to be reminded that somewhere out there, there was a cat who looked as grumpy as they felt.
“Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough,” Bundesen wrote, in a note from her and the rest of Grumpy Cat’s family.
Common house cat to a celebrity
The famous feline became an internet sensation when one of her photos went viral on Reddit. The initial image gained almost 1,030,000 views in the first 48 hours of its existence in 2012, according to Know Your Meme, a website that documents viral content.
After that, Grumpy Cat became a common meme used heavily throughout social media and her celebrity status blossomed in American culture. She appeared on “American Idol” and “The Bachelorette” and even got a taste of Broadway when she appeared for one-night in the musical, “Cats.”
Grumpy Cat was listed as one of Forbes’ top influences in 2017. She had around 2.5 million Instagram followers and close to 8.5 million likes on her Facebook page.
Grumpy’s face has starred in thousands of memes with many people choosing to share them again after hearing the news of her death.
