A few years ago, entrepreneurs were hailing Jack Ma as the tech titan of Asia. His net worth (38.6 billion USD) placed him amongst the world’s wealthiest businessmen. But as with all powerful figures, controversy is not far away.
At Ali Day, Alibaba’s annual employees celebration event, Ma said employees should have sexual activity six times every six days. And that it should last a long time, referencing the 996 working system that’s adopted in many tech companies in China, as reported by TechNode.
The follower of the ‘work hard, play hard’ motto managed to creep out more than one hundred newlyweds and their spouses attending Alibaba’s 15th annual “Ali Day” on Friday (10 May) when he urged his employees to engage in sexual activity six times a week. That’s a lot of sex.
Ma reportedly commented that employees should have the 996 spirit at work. But married couples should follow ‘669’ in their personal life.
According to Shanghaiist, Ma said that 669 meant “six days, six times”. He implied that his married employees should have sex six times in six days.
Capitalising on a pun where the Chinese pronunciation of ‘nine’ also means ‘long’, Ma also suggested that there should be an emphasis on how long each session lasts.
According to Shanghaist, Ma’s message echoes the intention of the Chinese government to increase the nation’s birth rate. Ever since the one-child policy was lifted due to an impending demographic crisis, birth rates have yet to rise.
His message, however, did not go down well with netizens.
One Chinese netizen said that “996” and “669” don’t seem terribly compatible.
“Get off work at 9 pm. Arrive at home at 10.30 pm. Who has the energy?”
On Technode, one netizen commented, “If an ordinary person said this, it would be considered as part of the ‘straight man cancer’.”
‘Straight man cancer’ is a Chinese term used to describe men who are self-righteous and indifferent to the value of and the obstacles faced by women.
Another netizen warns of health complications that could arise should anyone follow the 996 and 669 lifestyle.
“996 during the day, 669 during the night, I guess in less than a month I might have to stay in the ICU forever.”
