For the second year in a row, Apple launched 3 phones at once. In their annual keynote presentation, Tim Cook announced the new iPhone XS, XS MAX, and XR. The iPhone XS and XS MAX are available for pre-order from the 14th of September and the XR will go on sale on the 19th.

This article will take your through the features that these new phones have to offer and what are their differentiating factors.

Processor:

All three new phones feature Apple’s latest A12 Bionic Processor, a 7nm chip. Apple calls this chip ‘the smartest and most powerful chip ever in a smartphone.’  This is probably true because it has a 6-core CPU. 4 of them are efficiency core while the other two are solely for performance. Moreover, it also has  4-core GPU which Apple claims is 50% faster than their A11 processor. Not only that, Apple has developed a separate chip for AI related functions, the Neural Engine which can handle 5 trillion operations per second.

Camera:

All three phones use the exact same 12-megapixel f/1.8 primary camera. However, the XR lacks the zoom lens. For portrait-shots, the phones use a dual-camera lens. Moreover, Apple has developed a new sensor for the camera which is capable of smart HDR shots. This sensor decreases the noise when taking photos in low-light. Apart from just taking selfies, the camera app is also used for FaceID, Animoji, and Memoji. The new camera is also better at freezing motion shots and all of the new iPhones can shoot 4K video at 60 fps and 1080p slo-mo at 240 fps.

Dual-Sim:

One of the features which has never been seen before in any iPhone is the dual-sim tray. All the new iPhones support a nanoSIM card and an eSIM. This will surely be a boon for anyone travelling abroad regularly. However, currently only 9 countries support the eSIM feature. However, luckily , India is one of them.

FaceID:

The home button has now been completely eliminated from all the new models. However, this will not make sense unless the FaceID is sped up. Luckily, Apple has confirmed that they have changed the algorithm by adding a faster secure enclave.

Stereo Audio Recording:

Nobody knows why, but it took Apple until 2018 to allow its phones to able to record studio audio. Finally, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR each have 4 microphones on the base in order to allow stereo sound to be captured when filming a video. Apple has also bettered the quality of the stereo speakers.

Battery:

Apple claims that all the three new models have an improved battery life. The iPhone XS and XR will run 30 minutes more than the X. On the other hand, the XS Max will have a further improvement as Apple boasts that the phone will deliver an extra 1 and a half hour.

Pick the iPhone XS Max if you want the biggest screen ever in an iPhone. Choose the XR if you want the best colors. Pick the XS if you are looking for the best camera phone that is manageable in one hand.
