Harley Davidson has announced that they have developed an affordable bike which has a small displacement capacity motorcycle.
Harley has confirmed that they are going to work with a China-based company- Qianjiang as their partner to build the 338cc motorcycle. The bike will be manufactured in China, which is one of the biggest auto markets in the world. They will be exported to a number of countries including India. Harley has also revealed a rendered image of the 338 cc motorcycle. It looks more of an aggressive street-naked than the traditional cruiser design that the manufacturer is recognized for.
Harley Davidson’s idea is to cut cost by manufacturing and exporting the bikes from China.
Matt Levatich, President and CEO, Harley-Davidson said, “Harley-Davidson has always been about inspiring riders around the world. Our More Roads plan is all about bringing our brand of freedom to more people, in more places, in more ways. We’re excited about this opportunity to build more Harley riders in China, one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, by creating new pathways to our brand.”
Both US-based Harley and Qianjiang are going to produce the upcoming Harley-Davidson 338 cc naked bike. The styling of the bike is a mix between a street-fighter and a scrambler and is more of an urban naked. In addition, there are a lot of potential buyers for the upcoming bike like the young crowd, first-time Harley owners. Furthermore, the company will aim to provide a mix of old and new in design and technology. Although not much information is available about the underpinnings of the new motorcycle. The bike is likely to get a Trellis frame. In addition, it might have a liquid-cooled parallel twin motor, telescopic front forks, dual disc brakes and an analogue instrument console with a digital layout.
Harley Davidson and Qianjiang
Qianjiang is part of the Geely family of companies that own the automobile legend ‘Volvo’. In fact, it also manufactures for Benelli motorcycles. Harley’s tie-up makes sense as the company already has knowledge about both, the market and their vendors. The TNT 300’s engine, can be a base for the new bike. We guess that the engine will be a single-cylinder unit as it will help minimise costs.
Harley-Davidson wanted to expand its reach in the Asian market. Especially, in China and India, as it saw rival premium manufacturers like KTM, BMW, Triumph who are building low-cost bikes with Indian partners. Even in terms of global sales, KTM recently overtook Harley.
The new bike is to be priced between Rs 2.25 lakh and 2.5 lakh, while the twin-cylinder Harley might retail around Rs 3 lakh to 3.5 lakh (ex-showroom)
If Harley had found an Indian partner, India would have been one of the first markets in the world to get the low-cost Harley. But, the honour will now go to China as the bike will initially go on sale in the later months of 2020. Its arrival in other Asian markets would take place in the following year. Which means we would get a first look of the bike only in 2021.
