If you are not familiar with DuckDuckGo, it is an internet privacy company founded in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg. The company works as an alternate to search engines like Google and Yahoo. The company allows you to take control of your personal information online. Moreover, it also allows users to add more apps and extensions which disable sites like Facebook and Google from tracking you.
On the other hand, search engines like Google work in a completely opposite manner. On Google, your searches are tracked and monitored. Due to this advertisers are able to follow you around the Internet through web-banners and ads. When you click on links on Google or Bing, the search terms are sent to the site you’re visiting in the HTTP referrer header. Our computer automatically shares information with the site, even our IP address.
DuckDuckGo helps overcome this problem. They send a request to the site on which you clicked on in such a way that the site knows you visited them; however, they can’t identify you or gather information about what you searched beforehand. The data is protected even from DuckDuckGo itself.
A lot of people unfortunately believe that if they use the ‘Incognito’ mode, it disables tracking. Sadly, it does not work that way. The truth is that Google’s Incognito mode only prevents your browser history from being saved on your personal device. However, it does not provide additional protection like preventing sites from collecting your information.
While a lot of sites sell your data to advertisers who show the ever intrusive web-banners, DuckDuckGo makes money through keywords. For example, if a visitor searches for “car”, you will get a car ad. Weinberg said, “We don’t need to know about you or your search history to deliver a lucrative ad.”
The site is so safe in terms of privacy that it has never received any law enforcement requests. It cannot give information to the police because they literally don’t have any. Despite increased awareness of privacy issues and actions people can take, there are sadly still many people putting their privacy at risk, or, browsing with a false sense of privacy. DuckDuckGo aims to make the internet less creepy and get you the privacy you deserve online as easily as closing the blinds.
